Why Free Fire Banned in India? Explained

Due to national security concerns, Garena Free Fire, the popular battle royale game, has been banned in India. Earlier today, the Indian government blocked 54 Chinese applications amid tensions with China. The Chinese government has blocked 43 apps due to the same national security risk on five occasions since November 2020. PUBG Mobile and PUBG Mobile Lite were banned in September 2020, causing massive popularity to Garena Free Fire. Garena Free Fire remains a loyal fanbase despite Krafton’s release of Battlegrounds India and PUBG New State last year.

Garena Free Fire

This mobile game, Garena Free Fire, involves 50 players taking part in a deathmatch. After being thrown from a plane with no weapons, players must kill other players to ensure their survival. As soon as you kill your opponent, you get their artillery, so there are weapons all over the map.

In normal mode, the game continues until only one survivor remains. Besides interacting with her fans daily, Garena also gained a lot of popularity among them. In order to give players an edge in games, the company provided daily codes that delivered premium rewards.

In addition to India, Garena Free Fire remains a top battle royale mobile game in the United States. PUBG Mobile from Tencent was overtaken by Garena Free Fire, according to Sensor Tower in the US in Q1 2021, in terms of player spending. Furthermore, the game has accumulated one billion downloads on Google Play since January 2022, making it the first mobile battle royale game to reach this milestone.

The Apple App Store continues to ban Garena Free Fire and its enhanced version, Garena Free Fire Max. However, users can still play the Max version on their smartphones by downloading the game from Google Play. It is unclear if Garena Free Fire is still playable on smartphones, but its servers will probably be blocked soon. Indian authorities banned Chinese apps in 2020.

It is interesting to note that the official website of Garena Free Fire distributor Garena International claims the company is based out of Singapore. The company, however, has not explained why its name is listed on the government’s list of banned Chinese apps.

PUBG maker Krafton’s lawsuit against Garena came out a month after the ban on Garena in India was announced. According to Krafton, Garena copies PUBG’s elements and should be removed from Google Play and Apple’s App Store. The company also sued Google and Apple for not taking action against Garena.
