As a councilor in Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, Murmu started her political career as a member of the Santhal community in 1997. Later, she was elected vice president of Rairangpur National Advisory Council. The party’s ST Morcha promoted her to the rank of national executive member in 2013. From 2000-2002, Raupadi Murmu was the Minister of State for Fisheries and Animal Resource Development in the BJP-BJD coalition government of Odisha.

The Odisha Legislative Assembly awarded Murmu the Neelkanth Award for being the best legislator of the year in 2007. In 2000 and 2004, she represented Rairangpur assembly constituency in Odisha. In 2015, she became the first woman Governor of Jharkhand. This was the first time a tribal leader had been appointed governor. The first tribal president in India and the second woman president will be Draupadi Murmu after she is elected. As well as this, she will also be the first President from Odisha. He has nearly two decades of experience in politics and social service. 

The last date for the filing of nominations for the presidential election is on June 29 and voting will take place on July 18. Counting of votes will take place on July 2022.
